On 9-10 December 2020 International conference on combating new coronavirus infection and other infectious diseases was held at the Presidential Library in St. Petersburg.
The meeting of experts in epidemiology, virology, immunology and biotechnology was held in order to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against the new coronavirus infection, to develop scientific exchange between countries and strengthen the national capacities of partner countries to fight infectious diseases.
At the conference, scientists shared their experience in the fight against a new coronavirus infection and other infectious diseases. Within the framework of the event, it was planned to develop recommendations for improving epidemiological surveillance, as well as determine the prospects for further limiting the spread of COVID-19.
Anna Popova, Head of the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing, Chief State Sanitary Physician of the Russian Federation, welcomed the conference participants. In her speech she noted that this conference brought together almost 200 participants from 22 countries of the world, who would work in-person and using video conferencing. Anna Popova stressed that in the context of a pandemic of a new coronavirus infection, the exchange of experience between specialists from different countries was certainly extremely relevant, and Russia was open for such cooperation. The head of the Federal Service read the welcoming words from Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, in which he noted that “scientists, doctors, employees of health authorities and sanitary-epidemiological services are at the forefront of the fight against the largest pandemic in recent decades caused by the COVID virus. Russia is fully prepared for the broadest possible cooperation with foreign partners on the fight against the epidemic, for the exchange of gained experience in COVID-19 prevention and treatment”.
The words of greetings were also delivered by Igor Morgulov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, and Dr. Dorit Nitzan, Regional Emergency Director for the European Region of WHO during videoconference.
Also at the opening of the Conference a solemn ceremony of donating mobile laboratories to the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republics of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan was held.
