Dr. Esmael Belachew, a junior research fellow at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia), completed an internship at Saint-Petersburg Pasteur Institute on methods for bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput sequencing data. The internship took place at the Metagenomic Research Laboratory of the Institute under the supervision of Dr. Dmitry Polev, PhD, Senior Researcher, Laboratory Head.
The training covered data analysis steps, including processing raw reads obtained from DNA sequencing on second-generation systems, alignment to a reference sequence, and de novo genome assembly, searching for single-nucleotide differences between the studied genome and the reference sequence, visualizing genomic alignments, and identifying associations between genetic and phenotypic traits. As a practical work, a comprehensive analysis of targeted sequencing data of DNA samples was performed.
