Article on the molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis in northern Russia was published

The journal "Microbiology Spectrum" published an article "Key Impact of Beijing Strains, Including New Resistant Clusters, on the Spread of Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Northern Russia," co-authored by Anna Vyazovaya (corresponding author), Dmitrii Polev, and Igor Mokrousov.

The article presents the results of analysis of the molecular structure of M. tuberculosis and its dynamic changes in the Arkhangelsk region in northern Russia over the past 25 years. Authors identified important multidrug-resistant clusters and elucidated tuberculosis transmission patterns. An intriguing cluster of recent transmission was identified through the combined use of epidemiological investigation and whole-genome sequencing. The study highlights the key impact of resistant strains of the Beijing genotype and the importance of continuous epidemiological surveillance using high-precision genotyping.

“Microbiology Spectrum” is published by the American Society of Microbiology and is included in Scopus Q1 and Web of Science Q2.

This study received support from the Russian Science Foundation (grant no. 24-44-00004, project leader - Igor Mokrousov).
