On September 6 to 22, 2025, Dr. Maria Makarova, Leading Researcher, Intestinal Infections Laboratory, and Dr. Samida Zhamborova, Junior Researcher, Intestinal Infections Laboratory, participated in a joint scientific study at the Russian-Burundi Center for diarrheal diseases (Bujumbura, Republic of Burundi).
Based on the results of the study, they elaborated the report and a plan for further joint scientific research. It was recommended to continue collecting stool samples from patients with signs of acute intestinal infection, in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between St. Petersburg Pasteur Institut and the National Institute of Public Health of Burundi of July 28, 2023. Following a meeting with the Director of the National Institute of Public Health of Burundi, the project coordinator, and laboratory staff, an agreement was reached regarding prospects for further collaboration aimed at identifying the etiological factors of acute intestinal infections, as well as monitoring the resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to antibiotics in the Republic of Burundi.
